The Story

Abertay University Logo

The accomplishment is part of Abertay’s overarching goal to become a Net Zero Campus by 2038 and is designed to encourage staff and students to switch to active travel.

The Cycling Friendly Campus Award is based on four key areas: Strategy and Governance, Promotion and Communications, Services and Facilities, and Monitoring and Evaluation.

Abertay excelled in each of these performance zones, with a robust approach tailored to foster a bike-friendly culture among students, staff, and visitors.

The University undertook a baseline review of existing cycling infrastructure and services, mapping out the areas for improvement, aligning the initiative with Abertay’s Sustainable Development Strategy.

The benefits of cycling have been promoted to staff and students alongside information and resources on how to get started.

Abertay offers safe and secure bike storage and locker spaces, in collaboration with Abertay Students’ Association.

The University also offers a Cycle To Work scheme allowing staff to purchase a bicycle (or e-bike) worth up to £3000 whilst making tax and National Insurance savings through salary sacrifice.

Head of Procurement, Rhonda McKay said: “Abertay University’s Cycling Friendly Campus status reflects our commitment to sustainability and wellbeing, making cycling a core part of campus life and empowering students and staff to choose a greener, healthier way to travel. We’re proud to support a vibrant cycling culture that not only reduces our carbon footprint but also fosters a healthier, more connected campus community.”
