The Story
Recognising that travel is one of the institution’s main sources of emissions, the University is taking proactive steps to reduce staff and student travel and promote sustainable and responsible choices across the community.
The policy is rooted in Abertay University’s strategic approach which aims to harmonise sustainability with educational and research missions, promoting a culture of mindful travel that reduces environmental impact.
Taking a comprehensive approach, the University ensures consistency across departments, reinforcing sustainable choices in all forms of university-funded travel, including air, rail, road, and even accommodation.
The core principle of the policy is to challenge the necessity of travel. It encourages members of the University to assess whether travel is the best approach to achieving a business objective, promoting sustainable alternatives where possible. Virtual meetings, local collaborations, and other digital solutions are encouraged to replace in-person travel.
When travel is unavoidable, the policy advises selecting the most sustainable option available, such as trains over flights for domestic travel or walking and cycling for short distances. It includes a decision matrix available on the University’s intranet, helping staff and students evaluate travel options and make eco-friendly choices.
In addition, Abertay promotes active travel options like walking and cycling and offers salary sacrifice schemes to make low-emission vehicles more accessible for commuting to campus.
Travel activity and associated carbon emissions are tracked annually, with results published in the Annual Procurement Report and the University’s Sustainable Development Action Plan. This data-driven approach allows for transparent reporting and continuous improvement towards the university’s Net Zero goal.
Head of Procurement Rhonda McKay said: “By embedding sustainable travel practices within its operations, Abertay not only reduces its environmental footprint but also sets an example for students, staff, and the local community. In addition to environmental benefits, the policy contributes to public health by reducing pollution and encourages a more mindful, resource-efficient campus culture.”
