The Story

Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc Logo

This initiative focused on donating decommissioned office furniture, such as desks, chairs, and storage units, to schools and charitable organisations. By repurposing quality office items for educational and community use, the project promoted sustainability while supporting institutions in need. Through these donations, resources that would otherwise be discarded found new life, enhancing learning environments and enabling non-profits to allocate funds to their core missions.

Success & Outcomes

Success for this project was measured by the volume of furniture items successfully repurposed, the number and types of organisations benefiting from donations, and feedback from recipients on the impact of the furniture in their spaces. We also tracked reductions in disposal costs and waste diverted from landfills to further indicate the positive environmental impact. Additionally, we continue to assess long-term outcomes, such as improved functionality and comfort in learning environments, and monitor ongoing partnerships to gauge community reach and sustained support.

Advice for others looking to do something similar

For organisations looking to start a similar furniture donation initiative, begin by establishing partnerships with local schools, non-profits, and charitable organisations to understand their specific needs. Clear communication with recipients about furniture conditions and delivery logistics is essential for a smooth process. Ensure your team is aligned on quality control standards so only usable items are donated, and identify efficient ways to handle transportation and storage. Additionally, consider the environmental benefits and potential cost savings to communicate the project’s value to stakeholders. Documenting the impact, through feedback and metrics, can further highlight the initiative’s success and may encourage continued support from other companies. Starting small, then scaling based on demand and resources, can help ensure long-term sustainability of the project.
