The Story

team image sunrise solutions

‘Sunrise Solutions’ is an initiative supported by the Scottish Government’s Climate Engagement Fund and arose from the urgent need to address climate change through education. With the world facing increasingly severe environmental risks, Dundee & Angus College saw the opportunity to empower students with the knowledge and skills to become climate-conscious leaders. The initiative is about embedding sustainability into the heart of the college’s curriculum, helping students understand the connection between climate change, energy consumption, and household finances.

We have partnered with key organisations such as Home Energy Scotland and Multiply, as well as our internal Academic Development teams, to ensure students have access to the best possible resources and hands-on learning experiences. Students will be involved in creating educational materials that not only raise awareness but also encourage innovative thinking about climate solutions. Through this collaborative approach, students are not just learning about climate issues – they are becoming agents of change, influencing their communities and future workplaces.

Success & Outcomes

We will measure success through a combination of student engagement, educational outcomes, and practical application. Key indicators include enhanced climate literacy among students, increased participation in climate action initiatives, and the development of practical skills for sustainability-focused careers.

The outcomes from the project are set to be promising. We look forward to students actively engaging with real-world climate issues, creating educational materials, and participating in community projects. This hands-on experience will empower them to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives and prepare them to become the climate-conscious leaders of tomorrow.

Advice for others looking to do something similar

For anyone considering a similar project, collaboration is key. Partner with organisations that share your vision and can provide expertise and resources. Integrating sustainability into education isn’t just about delivering information – it’s about creating opportunities for students to engage with the material in meaningful, practical ways. Hands-on projects, like those being delivered through the Sunrise Solutions initiative, can have a transformative impact, helping students see themselves as leaders and change-makers.

Also, be flexible and responsive to the needs of your community. Listen to students, staff, and external partners, and adjust your approach as the project evolves. Most importantly, take a long-term view. Building a culture of climate-consciousness won’t happen overnight, but by instilling these values in students, you’re laying the foundation for a more sustainable future.
