Part of Nature-Based Solutions Week: Creating a Climate Ready Tayside

Join Forth Rivers Trust for a guided walk and talk exploring a long-term river and floodplain restoration project on the Allan Water near Blackford.

This site visit will showcase more than a decade of work to restore natural processes within the catchment and improve climate resilience. Historically, sections of the Allan Water were artificially straightened and embanked to protect nearby infrastructure, including the national rail line. Over the past five years, Forth Rivers Trust has been working to reconnect the river with its floodplain and restore natural habitats through a range of nature-based solutions.

Participants will learn about peatland restoration, tree planting, wetland creation, installation of large woody structures and leaky dams, and work to reconnect the floodplain by lowering sections of artificial embankment. Together, these actions help improve biodiversity, manage flood risk, store carbon and increase resilience to climate change.

The site also borders a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and holds local historical and mythological significance, making it a fascinating example of nature recovery in action.
